Through The Void

Through The Void is a collaborative art project inspired during a visit to Brookwood American Military Cemetery by sculptor Andy DeComyn & artist Fran DeComyn. It explores the impact of war on families through the grief of bereaved mothers.

The project was developed partly in response to an Imperial War Museums (IWM) call for art works befitting and inspired by Peter Jackson's film 'They Shall Not Grow Old'. That idea is to maintain the impetus of arts & arts programmes initiated by the First World War centenary.
The vision of Through The Voidshares & in some respects surpasses that of the IWM to create a lasting, understandable, tangible focus on bereavement and a unique federal governement response of the time. The relevance of the project continues into our time and the impact of hostilities.
Our  vision includes:
* honouring & keeping the memory of those whose lives were sacrificed in conflict & recognising the impact on mothers, families & friends.
* reaching out to individuals or bringing people together to discover, consider, reflect & confront the impact of war.
*broaden public understanding of the consequences of war and conflict from the First World War to present day through the sharing of new stories, and engagement with under represented voices.

Engaging with the Gold Star Mothers is to experience steadfast dignity, discrimination, love, grief, pride, joy, healing, acceptance and the politics of a nation intent on thanking Mothers for their sacrifice & alleviating their grief moving Through The Void.

Sponsorship funds totalling £30,000 are sought to realise both the sculpture and integral graphic novel.
